In We Will All Be Minorities by Ronald Takaki, he shares the ideas of many famous people from different ethnicities. Through his article, Takai is expressing that America is a very diverse nation and eventually there will be no ethnic group that is considered a majority or more superior than the others. He begins his article with a brief summary of the experience he had as he went to help President Bill Clinton with writing a speech about race. Then he includes brief opinions of diverse famous people, such as Tiger Woods and our president, Barack Obama. He concludes his article with the impression of America becoming a diverse nation where all ethnicity is accepted.
I was impressed as I read We Will All Be Minorities by Takaki. The beginning of Takaki’s article was already very compelling; I was surprised that a President would request a person to help him write a speech. As I continued reading the article, it became more transparent to me that there are many famous supporters of America becoming a home to all diverse ethnicities. I really enjoyed reading this article; Takaki had a specific message that he wanted to send to his audience and he carried it out with support from well-known Americans from diverse backgrounds; thus, further proving his point.
My response to the discussion questions in We will All Be Minorities are: number one, although our nation becomes more multi-ethnic and there ceases to be a majority of any racial group, I do not think that it is possible to achieve harmony in our society because there will always be more issues that will need to be addressed. Our society is very complex; there is not only the problem of ethnic diversities that needs to be addressed, other social problems needs to be solved also. Question two: in a multi-ethnic society, I think that individual groups should maintain their cultural practices and values while being open-minded about other ethnic groups. Every ethnic group should have the choice to maintain their cultural practices and values if they choose, but while doing so, they should also be aware that there are also other ethnic groups. Question three: I think that even though there are increased population numbers for people of color, white Americans will continue to receive a disproportionately large share of economic and governmental influence because the increased population numbers of people of color will not matter unless they are able to vote and take the initiative to vote.
