1) Higher Education
I view higher education as a bridge that allows individuals to have a choice as to where they want to be in life. I want this issue about higher education to be focused primarily on persuading more people from the general population to strive for higher education and for the government to implement into law the attainment of at least two years of college before anyone can drop out. Everything links to education because it shapes how individuals think and how they perceive information. If the general population become more educated, they will better understand the world, politics, and their own perspectives of things. From further improving the majority's knowledge, we can further improve our world, ecosystem, and way of life.
Higher education is important due to the fact that it affects the way each individual thinks. I know this on a personal level because the more education I receive, the more I think about certain situations and what is presented to me. I know many individuals, a majority of our country, do not pursue higher education because they quit due to personal reasons, they have other priorities, or there are other factors. I also know that these individuals have the responsibility as everyone else to decide the future of our country by voting and voicing their thoughts. I think the standards in our education system needs to changed.
By saying that the standards in our education system needs change, I am suggesting that citizens who start their education in America should be required to finish at least two years of college before deciding to end their education career. Not only should the years that are required for school be changed, the standards for high school should also change. There should be no such thing as drop-outs. The students who are failing must retake the class with a different teacher and if they still fail, they will have to go to another high school to complete the class with other teachers. At the age of twenty if they are still failing, they will be required to move onto higher education and pay for all their classes out of their own pocket with no aid, even if they qualify. Students should be encouraged to receive higher education so that the future of our country will be more secure.

I also want to know if taking two years of college will help each individual understand more information about their country and surroundings. I would like to analyze the differences of decisions between a person who dropped out and a person who has had two years of college education. Higher education is a very complex and broad topic. However, it is not a subject that is impossible to improve. To enhance higher education, it starts with the students. There should a research done with students and professors analyzing about the voting behaviors and daily life decisions of students who choose not to pursue higher education and those who have completed higher education. In the research, the researchers are looking for differences between the two subject groups. This research should progress until all of the subjects of research have passed. It would be very tedious and long, but I believe that the results would be very beneficial to our community. The results that may be found could be used to encourage new generations to pursue higher education. Thus, not only fulfilling research as the goal of universities, but also service. The students will learn more about appreciating their education.
Addressing the conflict higher education, universities should research about the differences in decisions between individuals who have completed higher education and those who chose not to. I think any of the university personnel or department is likely to be aligned with efforts to address the problem of higher education. Universities are a place for higher education, so it would beneficial for universities to research the difference in decision making between higher education graduates and high school graduates. Some ways that I can participate in addressing the problem is helping research about the differences in opinions and helping advocate for this research to be done. This commitment might reflect my understanding of higher education because I am becoming involved with the campus along with the community and using all the skills that I learned and is still learning to try to solve an issue in our community.

When comparing higher education and the major I am considering, I don’t find that they relate. The major I want to pursue is Business accounting and I find that it differs from higher education. Higher education is very general and because of the differences between this contemporary issue and my intended major, it may signify that I have other interests outside of my intended major.

2) Women's Equality
Throughout history women are viewed as inferior and of much lesser value than men. Even today, women are still perceived as the same or very similar to the views in the past. The difference from the past and today is that in many parts of the world, the perspective of women are slowly changing. The issue I specifically want to address in terms of women's equality is the amount of pay women should be receiving; they should be receiving the same amount of money that men are paid for the same amount of work. It makes no sense to me, especially in the age of technology that women are being paid less than men for the same amount of work. There should be a law put in place that ensures women are paid the same as men for the same amount of work that they do.
Women’s equality is significant to me. As a women myself, I find it unfair that even today men are paid more than women. The suffering that women before me had faced, especially during the Women’s Suffrage Movement, is more than enough to verify that women and men are equals. I know women have been discriminated throughout history, no matter who they were or what ethnicity they were; they were always less than the men.
I believe women should be given the same rights as men. Women are just as capable at performing an action just like a man can. It has been years since the Women’s Suffrage Movement, yet women have not received the same pay as men yet. I would like to learn why is it that women receive less pay than men? It confuses me because the majority of women spend more money on purchasing items than men. I want to learn from the men’s side also, why do they think women should not have the same rights?

Women’s equality is a topic that has been debated through centuries. Women were (and still are) thought of as inferior to men. It really boils my blood every time I think about this subject. However, the view of women is slowly changing. As a result of past efforts, women are treated at a better level today than they ever were in history. Although there is improvement, it does not signify that men and women are now equal. One of the biggest issues about men and women is the amount of payment each individual should receive. Today men are still paid more than women for the same occupation. To address this specific issue from women’s equality, a research project should be devised. The research should consist of students with professors who have similar views and past experience of such projects. The Women’s Studies on campus should also be used; not only to educate, but also be a safe place for the individuals who are involved to express their opinions and analyze their findings. The research should be about the impact of women on the economy. How mush an average women spends compared to men and from the outcome, what could possibly be the results if women were paid the same as men. Through this project, instruction and research should be met as goals of the universities. As a result of this research, students may be more willing to voice their opinions instead of keeping them to themselves.
In an attempt to solve the problem of women receiving equal pay as men, I think the university should bring the problem to the public’s attention, research about why women should be receiving equal pay, and endorse the topic. I think many women from the university and the Women’s Studies on campus would very much be aligned to supporting this issue. I can try to address the problem by helping bring attention to the issue, helping do research and advocate for support of equal pay for women. This commitment might reflect my understanding of higher education because it is something that I am very passionate about; I can use everything that I have learned to support this topic and hopefully not be too emotional about it.

3) Organic Food
In the age of technology, even the simple things in our lives have been effected, even what we put into our bodies. We eat things subconsciously, without even worrying or thinking about where our food has been or what our food really is. Take fast food for example, when you are eating something from the menu, do you question what is actually made of? Our general population do not ask what are food actually is; we just view the price, sometimes the calories, and the taste. The issue I want to address is how much of the food that is sold/being produced is organic, meaning that it is not GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). I think research should be done to see what GMOs do to our bodies. Sure, it may not be apparent or clear at first, but it should be given thought and analysis, such as can these GMOs alter our genetics? Can GMOs cause diseases or an increase of diseases? What really happens to GMOs after we intake it? There should e careful analysis, not just focused on one or a few of the generations that we study, but on at least four to five. After learning the results, corporations that produce GMOs should also be required to place labels on their product stating that they are GMOs and products produced from GMOs should also have label on them.
The third contemporary issue that I have chosen is about organic foods. Growing up, you do not think about what you are putting in your mouth. Recently in the last few years, I have heard issues surrounding the topic of genetically modifying the food we eat and adding certain chemicals into our food. Extracting genes from other living creatures and placing it into our food does not seem natural, it seems like it is against nature. I find it funny how bugs and animals tend to stay away from chemicals, but yet companies put it into the food we consume. There are many problems about organic foods and the other types that are there.
The solution I believe that is best in this circumstance is to require companies to label every genetically modified product and ensure that the chemicals placed into our foods will not affect us. It will be the decision of the consumer to purchase which ever item they may choose, while being informed about exactly what they are purchasing. I would like to find out if eating organic food, meaning no GMO (genetically modified) or chemicals will help increase the energy and life span of people. I would also like to learn if the GMO and chemical in food have anything to do with the continuous cases of cancer and other similar diseases.

Organic food is a topic that is also heavily disputed upon. The research project that should be done on this topic would consist of professors from biology, nutrition, and agricultural fields. The students who are participating as part of the research category of the project should be involved in these fields or have interest in the topic being researched. The researchers will be analyzing the effects of food product that are GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) on the overall human health, behavior, and longevity in a subject group; while they analyze the effects of organic food with the same evaluations on a different subject group. The researchers will be looking for signs of change between the two subject groups. The research will be done once all the subjects that are being tested have passed. The results will be aimed to help educate the public more about how GMOs may affect or not affect them. By completing this project, research and instruction will be met of the universities goals. Also students will be able to take care of their well-being starting with what they eat.
In terms of organic food, I believe universities should definitely play a big role. Universities should be the key place to finding out exactly what we are eating and revealing all these findings to the public, not hesitating in regards to the big corporations that endorse GMO. Furthermore the universities should be the ones researching what happens when we intake these GMOs into our bodies. The agricultural and health departments would be big supporters in addressing this problem because growing organic food is crucial to the agricultural field and analyzing the results of GMOs on human health is significant to many health studies. I can participate by helping research about the effects of GMOs on human health. This might reflect my understanding of higher education by showing what I have learned, how to use it; while still acknowledging that I am learning more as time goes on.

Comparing Organic foods and business accounting indirectly relates to one another depending on what topic is being reviewed. If the amount of money that are made off of GMOs and the money lost/gained if food were to be labeled as GMOs were to calculated, it would somewhat relate to Business Accounting. Task 1: Reflecting on Contemporary Issues (CIs)
Experiences shape who we are and why we behave a certain way. No one experiences the same things. Even if the scenarios are similar, the information that is conceived by one person may be different from another. In this ETHN 21 class, we were to choose five contemporary issues and research about them. The five contemporary issues that I chose are all different broad topics that hold meaning to me.
The number one contemporary issue I chose is higher education. I chose higher education because I believe that if the majority of citizens are well educated, they will have a better understanding of the issues within their daily lives. My second contemporary issue is Women’s equality. I am very passionate about this topic and also very emotional. I believe that at the minimum women should receive is equal treatment as men; they experience so many hardships and deserve respect. The third contemporary issue that I chose is organic food. I believe there should be labels on food produce differentiating between genetically modified and organic food. Due to the fact that there has been many diseases that have unknown causes, we should allow people to know what they are choosing to eat. My fourth contemporary issue is animal cruelty. I love animals and I believe that they should be treated right. The animals do not have a choice of who their owner will be; we choose them. Therefore, we should care for them like they are our family because we chose to take responsibility for them when we claimed them as ours. The last contemporary issue that I chose is pollution. The ozone layer is slowly deteriorating due to the amount of pollution on Earth. We should try to restrict the amount of pollution that we cause. The more we pollute the Earth, the more we are destroying our home. We should work together to clean our planet for future generations. These are my contemporary issues.
I think these contemporary issues reflect the caring side of me. I really care about the Earth and the living creatures within it. I believe that every living creature wants to survive. I think my values come from my experiences because each of the contemporary issues I have listed has affected me in some way. I want to improve the Earth and the living conditions of its inhabitants to make the world a better place.
