In American Higher Education: A Brief History by William H. Halverson, the author describes the history of higher education in the United States and emphasizes how the American universities have evolved over time. Halverson explains that the colonial colleges were established based on the English Universities, Oxford and Cambridge. He continues by adding that the curriculums changed due to the expansion westward. America found that it needed to change the system from creating gentlemen to preparing men for professions. As time progressed, additional changes were also added; such as the enabling the attendance of women. Halverson sums up his essay by emphasizing the three major tasks of universities: instructions, research, and public service.
Reading American Higher Education: A Brief History by William H. Halverson was evocative of things I have read before in my history classes. I remember briefly reading about the first universities established in the United States, which Halverson had explained. Something that intrigued me was when Halverson had shortly described colleges becoming coeducational. It reminded me that women were viewed of as inferior to men and they were not allowed to go to higher education. It really upsets me that women are viewed as lesser than men, especially when it comes to education. What makes women inferior to men? Why does society view women like that? The three major tasks: instructions, research, and public service that Halverson emphasized are apparent at Sacramento State where I am attending. I receive instructions from my professors, and I know that there is research constantly being done on campus; at the same time, serving the public is encouraged. Although it is clearly visible that the universities pursue these tasks, I wonder if the community colleges are doing the same. This piece by William H. Halverson reminded me why I am thankful that I, an oriental woman, am able to attend college.
In Technology Skills: Wireless, Windowed, Webbed, and Wikied by Constance Staley, the pros and cons of technology are presented. Staley explains how technology can help college students throughout their educational career. She specifically emphasized on the pros and cons of the internet; providing examples for both. Staley concludes her essay by stressing that the internet be kept neutral between good and bad and to make wise choices.
The information in Constance Staley’s essay, Technology Skills: Wireless, Windowed, Webbed, and Wikied were very logical. She pointed out the obvious information about technology; which I found is very helpful because sometimes we tend to overlook the simplest things. The topic she emphasized upon the internet; is a subject that still has controversial views today. Some people argue that it is dangerous and unsafe, whereas others view it as helpful and informative. I agree with what Staley had said; we should keep the use of internet neutral and make wise choices.
